Carpet Tiles

We’re well aware that new carpets, once you’ve allowed for fitting and underlay, are a real investment purchase. So if you’re feeling the pinch but desperately need to get some new flooring down, why not consider carpet tiles? We have a large range of fantastic carpet tiles, both new and reclaimed (secondhand) and it’s really easy to fit them yourself if you’ve the time to spare.

What are the benefits of fitting carpet tiles?

Carpet tiles can be laid in all areas of the home or workplace and they’re ideal for awkward-shaped rooms as you buy for the area, not the width of the carpet roll. They’re much easier for you to transport and handle than a carpet roll, and you don’t need underlay. They’re easy to fit because they can be put down without the need for emptying the whole room and loose-laying also means that individual carpet tiles can be removed for cleaning. There are over 100 different options of colour and texture.

How many carpet tiles will I need?

If the carpet tiles are 50cm x 50cm, you will need 4 carpet tiles to cover a square metre. If the tiles are 18” x 18” you will need to allow an extra 10%. If the tiles you have chosen are 480mm x 480mm you will need an extra 8% to allow for the adjustment. We recommend though, that you allow 10% extra for those awkward areas. For example, if you have a room that’s 5m [16’5”] x 4m [13’1”] that’s 20 sq metres. Add 10% allowance, and so you should order 22 square metres, which is 88 tiles. If you fancy going for a chequered pattern of 2 colours, then you’d simply order 44 of each.

What do I need to do before laying the carpet tiles?

At the risk of stating the obvious, if you are planning to decorate the room, do that first to avoid the risk of paint splashes and spills, and remove all furniture from the room if you can. You’ll need a metal tape measure, a craft knife (either with plenty of extra blades, or one of the snap-off blade types) and a metal edge such as a metal rule to keep your lines straight when you cut the tiles. Good preparation is the key, and just allow yourself plenty of time.

How do I lay the carpet tiles?

Find the centre of the room by finding the middle of the length and the width - where the two lines cross, lay your first carpet tile. If you start fitting the tiles from the centre, the cut carpet tiles on opposite walls will be the same size and the whole job will look more professional. As long as the tiles are butted up to each other to fit tight between all four walls, they won’t move.
When you need to cut a carpet tile, mark the tile on the back and then score it by running the knife along the metal rule - cutting away from you.
